Javi López

I grew up in Barcelona, a cosmopolitan European city with deep Mediterranean roots. From an early age, I came to understand politics as an instrument of public service and as a bridge between local realities and global decisions. That calling has led me to work for over a decade toward a stronger, fairer Europe, capable of defending its interests, and to strengthen the ties between Barcelona, Catalonia and the European institutions.

I have served as a Member of the European Parliament for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, representing PSC-PSOE, since 2014. Since 2024, I have held the position of Vice-President of the European Parliament. I divide my time between Barcelona and Brussels, working on budgetary oversight and the functioning of the Parliament, as well as on the relationship between the European Union and regional and local governments. In the European Parliament, I have lead initiatives relating to the ecological transition, its impact on the urban agenda and the reinforcement of European strategic autonomy. I have been personally involved in shaping the European Green Deal, particularly in areas such as mobility, housing, sustainable infrastructure and the role of cities in Europe’s climate and industrial transformation. My work also encompasses the European Union’s external action, security, and the defense of multilateralism and international law.

I complement this legislative work with institutional liaison and parliamentary diplomacy, with a particular focus on Latin America through the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat), which I co-chaired between 2019 and 2024.

I hold a Law degree from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Master’s in Leadership for Political and Social Management from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Prior to joining the European Parliament, I served as a district councillor and Socialist spokesperson at Les Corts, in the Barcelona City Council — an experience that fundamentally shaped my approach to politics.

I believe in a politics that is purposeful, grounded in the realities of citizens’ lives, and capable of forging lasting agreements across institutions, territories, and economic and social actors. A politics that listens, builds trust, and translates Europe’s great challenges into tangible improvements in people’s everyday lives.
