The Euro MP Javi López has participated in two events organised as part of the COP25 Climate Summit in Madrid
Midday in the Green Area at COP25, which designed for civic society activities, welcomed an event organised by the Party of European Socialists (PES) together with the S&D Group from the European Parliament. Under the heading “Open Dialogue on Climate Action”, the event brought together the Secretary of State for Energy, José Domínguez, the President of the S&D Group, Iratxe García, and the President of the PES, Sergei Stanishev, amongst others. Javi López was the debate moderator as they discussed the progressive priorities for climate actions.
They highlighted the need for Europe to be the leader in the fight for a sustainable planet, as well as leading this sustainable transformation in a holistic way, taking into account environmental, economic and above all, social factors.
Javi López stated that “Climate action is at the centre of our programme and our policies. The climate emergency is real and that is why we are going to experience the most drastic change in our economy of the last 150 years. The decarbonisation and transition towards an environmental economy won’t be easy, but we will make sure that it is done in the fairest way possible.”
Javi López chaired the extraordinary meeting for the PES’ Climate Change Network, which he was recently appointed President for
The event had participation from the Secretary of State for the Environment Hugo Morán, the Euro MP Miriam Dalli, the President of the S&D Group Iratxe García, as well as representatives from social and environmental organisations. During the meeting Hugo Morán informed on the state of COP25 negotiations, and the Euro MP Miriam Dalli explained the current state and future challenges of European Union climate laws to the participants. Lastly, Iratxe García informed on the work of the socialists at the European Parliament to demand and ensure more civic climate policies that will not leave anybody behind. The event was held at the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) headquarters on Ferraz.
Javi López stated that “the EU has pioneered and must continue to pioneer advancements on climate action. With the announcement of the Green Deal, Europe is going to set the path that needs to be followed in order to alleviate this climate emergency. And as socialists we will make sure that this plan of action combines climate and socio-economic action and that it will take into account all the actors involved without leaving anybody behind”.
